Overview: This presentation will unpack “Physical Literacy” as it applies to middle and high school, suggesting how to use Physical Literacy to enhance your teaching units.
Details: This presentation will have three objectives to explore: 1.     Physical Literacy has been around since 1987, when Margaret Whitehead defined it as “range of physical capacities that would enable individual persons to . . . .  help them to become richer persons both in themselves and in respect of that which they know about the world”.   Globally, physical literacy has been utilized to target “educating the whole child”, not just the mind.  This presentation show how this can be translated to NC classrooms, specifically middle and high schools where the need is greatest. 2.    Simply put, Physical Literacy means the ability to use your body in time, space and range to its fullest capability in order to be the best person you can be”.  Dance educators focus on this every day.  This presentation will discuss how do we apply the concepts of Bloom’s Taxonomy in our unit plans to illustrate what we already do? 3.    It is easy to see how this ties right back in to the Laban Elements of Dance:  Body, Action, Time, Space and Energy.  We often base our dance units around exposing how these elements work in dance.  This presentation will also show how these elements work in Physical Literacy.
