Overview: To discuss health/physical education programs and services for K-12 students with disabilities in schools by evaluating NC Policies and implemented programs in Pitt County schools. Details: Studies have reported that children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities have a higher prevalence of being overweight and obese due to the nature of disabling conditions, medication intake, poor diet, and physical inactivity. More importantly, they lack awareness and comprehension to prevent weight problems and to develop healthy behaviors. The purpose of this session is to discuss the needs of health-promoting programs (e.g., healthy eating, physical activity) in the curriculum of health and PE for students with disabilities by addressing the continuum of services in health and PE, program opportunities, and the roles of educational professionals. With: Jim Decker, Jeff Pizzutilla, Mike Dawson, Michele Mazey, Jonathan Wells and Chandler Elliot-Wint.
